҉ Don't get logs that are too old, Walnut, Cedar, Pine, or Fir of any kind
҉ Don't get logs that have been cut in less that 2 weeks
҉ Don't burn your self on wax
҉ Don't drill your-self
҉ Don't forget to wash your hands before touching your plugs, or wear gloves
҉ Put your log somewhere you won't forget about it
Drill six rows of 1.5” deep holes. Just deep enough to have a little bit of space past the plug. Make them about a fist length apart and stagger your holes so they end up in diamond patterns. This will help keep them evenly spaced along the entire log. This way the mycelial growth will be even through the whole log.
Pound the plugs into the holes with a mallet, or softly with a hammer. Try not to smash your plugs. Now your plugs are in the holes you can cover them with the hot wax! This protects the fungi from getting eaten by bacteria or having to compete with other fungi. This also keeps the moisture inside with the plug.
Now your log is inoculated! Wait 1-2 years for your log to fill with the mycelium. Once the log is fully eaten by the mushroom it will fruit! You can soak your log in cold water for 12-24 hours to stimulate fruiting. Shiitake like it when you hammer the length of the log, or drop it on pavement. Good Luck!
